Important decision

It can be a daunting and deeply personal decision to choose to undergo a cosmetic surgical procedure. Not only is it a bodily improvement, but plastic surgery can be regarded as a form of boosting one’s self esteem and restoring self-confidence. That being said, effective communication with your surgeon to address your personal desires and aesthetic vision is key to achieving optimal results, physically and mentally.

Choosing a surgeon

The first step in any surgical journey is choosing a surgeon with whom you feel completely comfortable. He/she should invite you to an open conversation about how to best attain your goals while making sure you are fully informed and understand any potential risks. It is important to listen to your surgeon’s recommendations while maintaining sight of who you are and what you need as an individual. The environment in the consultation created by the surgeon should encourage you to organically and comfortably be able to ask questions- which brings up the next point.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions

There are never “dumb questions” to be asked! Yes, surgeons have many patients, but it is their job to administer the best possible care to every one of them, address their needs, and uphold medical excellence. They are there to help, yet they will not be able to do so without your assertive questions. The soothing of your mental qualms and worries is a part of being confident in the treatment plan prior to surgery and part of the post-surgery mental recovery process, so do not be afraid to ask questions! It is natural to feel some anxiety, whether it’s excitement for your anticipated new look or a bit of preoperative stress. Don’t be shy about discussing these feelings with your doctor.

You have to feel it

Keep in mind that you are not obligated in any way to go forward with a procedure beyond the consultation if you do not feel understood by your doctor or contented with the way care has been given. If you find that you are unable to participate in a dialogue with your surgeon, securely ask questions, and discuss all your desires, it is better to schedule a consultation in another facility and from another physician than stay with a treatment plan that makes you feel insecure. It is your right to take initiative and seek care elsewhere. The surgeon and facility staff will not be bitter or offended. You deserve care that you feel is best tailored to you.

Here is a list of recommendations prior to your consultation to encourage patient confidence:

  • Bring someone with you. It is better to have an extra pair of ears to remember information you may later forget
  • Write a list of questions at home prior to the consultation, as few or as many as you choose!
  • Contact the office for scientific literature concerning your procedure for supplementary information
  • Ask the surgeon how many of your procedures he/she has done before
  • If you need further information, please call our office at 616-323-3102. Our knowledgeable staff is just a phone call away to assist you as your needs arise.

Gathering the courage to enter a consultation room can be daunting, but it is evident that you have it in you to take control over your care – you have already made it this far!
